Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan said today in the Senate Judiciary confirmation hearings that she’s cried “only once during this process,” and it was when she read a Washington Post op-ed by veteran Marine Captain Robert Merrill that praised Kagan for her support for the military.
Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) had asked Kagan about the op-ed, and she responded that Supreme Court confirmation process has sometimes been an “arduous one,” but that she’s “only cried once during this process, and I cried when I woke up one morning and I read that op-ed.”
She added: “It means just an enormous amount to me,” and Merrill’s “praise meant more to me than anybody’s.”
