Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) has little optimism about Republicans’ willingness to overturn a Presidential veto, should the bipartisan committee craft a funding bill that could pass out of Congress.
When asked about the scenario Tuesday on MSNBC, Durbin had a folksy summation: “Then we’re back in the soup again.”
He also voiced qualms about President Donald Trump hypothetically using an executive order to declare a national emergency, should Congress fail to find compromise.
“I want to tell you, the President is also dangling this possibility of executive action,” he said. “I’m not sure what that looks like and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea under the Constitution to give the President that much authority, but he’s left that out there as a possibility if his own party is not supporting another shutdown.”
