On Face the Nation this morning, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had sharp words for Iran in advance of multilateral meetings scheduled for Oct. 1.

“We are going to put them to the test on Oct. 1,” she said, adding that the burden is on Iran to show, not tell, the necessary details to support its claims that its nuclear program is peaceful.

“Prove it,” she said. “Don’t assert it. Prove it.”

Words are not enough. They’re going to have to come and demonstrate clearly to the international community what they’re up to.

And if Iran doesn’t “open up their entire system to the kind of extensive investigation that the facts call for?”

“We’re exploring how you broaden and deepen sanctions,” Clinton said.

Add Clinton’s voice to the growing chorus this morning demanding concessions from Iran. Earlier on the Sunday news shows, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates called for the possibility of tougher sanctions on Iran. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ), on the other hand, suggested regime change.
