A helicopter crash landed into the top of a building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday afternoon, killing one person, CNN and the New York Times reported.

The sole occupant of the helicopter was the pilot, who is believed to be dead, according to CNN and the Times. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed that the one fatality is “presumed” to be the pilot.

De Blasio told reporters there is no indication that the incident was an act of terror, but the officials have not yet determined a cause for the crash.

There were no other injuries that we know of at this point in time to anyone in the building or on the ground. And I want to just say, thank God for that,” de Blasio told reporters Monday. “This could have been a much worse incident. And thank God no other people were injured in this absolute shocking, stunning incident.”

President Trump has been “briefed on the helicopter crash,” the White House said in a statement. He is monitoring the situation. In a tweet, he praised the “GREAT First Responders” on the scene.

Footage of the scene showed a significant emergency response. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo arrived on the scene and told reporters that the helicopter crashed onto the rooftop of the building “for one reason or another” and caused a fire.

The fire has now been extinguished, according to the New York Police Department.

“People who were in the building said they felt the building shake, the fire department believes the fire is under control,” Cuomo told reporters. “There may have been casualties involved (with) people in the helicopter.”

The building is located on 7th Avenue, between 51st and 52nd Streets. It’s a very busy area of Manhattan, near Times Square.

No one in the building is believed to have been injured, according to “preliminary information” Cuomo shared with reporters.

While speaking to reporters, the governor acknowledged the unease New Yorkers inevitably feel from any aircraft-related accident in Manhattan.

“If you’re are New Yorker you have a level of PTSD, right? From 9/11,” he said. “And I remember that morning all too well. So as soon as you hear an aircraft hit a building, I think my mind goes where every New Yorker’s mind goes.”

This is a developing story.

  1. What’s weird is I had just tuned in to watch Dean give his testimony in the House after hours listening to blowhards comment on cable news about how pointless and ridiculous his testimony would prove to be, and I see this crash in NY on my TV. I know NY is the center of the universe but if they wanted breaking news, I’m sure someone is getting gunned down in America somewhere at this very moment… Not trying to trivialize this crash, but its almost like cable news has performed an act of self-prophesy on the unimportance of the Judiciary committee’s attempt to attract the public’s attention to witnesses before them regarding the very real importance of the Mueller report. Just saying…

ETA: Joyce Vance is testifying right now. It can be viewed on C-Span3 btw.

  2. Look, respectfully, are you seriously saying this is a news choice made to minimize attention to Dean testifying? This is an aircraft crashing into a building in New York City. That’s going to be a big news story any day of the week no matter what else is going on, and it will probably be like that for the rest of our lives.

  3. CNN is reporting there is no obvious damage to the top of the building due to the helicopter crash at this point. Some smoke from the helicopter though it seems. And yes, I do think they should have delayed reporting on it until they knew more, rather than set off needless hysteria that this is comparable to some kind of terrorist threat.

  4. Only wish the name Trump had been on top of it.

  5. But that’s not how it works. When a major news story breaks you tell people as much as you know about what happened and update as you learn more. That’s what news is. Nobody said anything about terrorism. They evacuated the one building, as far as I could tell with no hysteria involved. The police are calling it a “hard landing,” not a crash, and it’s guessable the pilot, who was the only passenger and has died, ran into some trouble and attempted to land safely on that roof.
