Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters during this afternoon’s press briefing that President Barack Obama will call Afghan President Hamid Karzai this afternoon, in the wake of Karzai being declared the winner in Afghanistan’s presidential election after his main rival Abdullah Abdullah dropped out.
Gibbs had this to say of the Afghan president: “Obviously he is the legitimate leader of the country.”
“I don’t think there’s any reason to the believe that the Afghan people won’t think that this government is as legitimate as it is,” Gibbs said.
Obama last spoke with Karzi, Abdullah and Ambassador Eikenberry the morning the runoff was first solidified, Gibbs said.
