Sen. Diane Feinstein requested the Senate Judiciary Committee hold hearings with former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker regarding Sessions’ ousting and Whitaker’s appointment.
In letters to Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) Feinstein, who serves as the ranking members on the committee, said it was “critically important” that the committee know why Sessions departed the administration and suggested that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should maintain his role overseeing the Russia probe, not Whitaker.
“There appears to be an effort by the President to substitute Mr. Whitaker who has criticized the investigation and even suggested a different attorney general could not fire Bob Mueller, but ‘just reduce his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to almost a halt,'” she wrote.
Feinstein also noted that Sessions never answered all of the committee’s questions about former FBI Director James Comey’s firing and Russian interference in the 2016.
