A package containing what appeared to be an explosive device was found in the mailbox of a Bedford, New York home reportedly co-owned by George Soros’s private company, local and national news outlets have reported.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force Division is investigating the incident, saying in a Twitter statement that “there is no threat to public safety” at this time.
According to police who spoke to a local USA Today affiliate, an “employee of the residence” found the package and moved it away from the home before calling police.
The home is reportedly owned by Soros Fund Management LLC. Police would not say whether the device actually had the potential to explode.
Soros, a billionaire who regularly supports liberal causes, has increasingly become a target of ire by far-right conspiracists. Most recently, President Trump and activists on the far-right claimed Soros had paid the protesters who came to Capitol Hill to oppose Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination.
