In a statement outside the courtroom Tuesday, a federal prosecutor said Michael Cohen “decided that he was above the law, and for that he’s going to pay a very, very serious price.”
Robert Khuzami, deputy U.S. attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office for New York’s Southern District, outlined the eight felony charges to which Cohen had pleaded guilty.
“These are very serious charges and reflect a pattern of lies and dishonesty over an extended period of time,” Khuzami said. “They are significant in their own rights. They are particularly significant when done by a lawyer, a lawyer who through training and tradition understands what it means to be a lawyer, to engage in honest and fair dealing and adherence to the law.”
Khuzami acknowledged that “this case is unique in many ways,” but said it was fundamentally the same as every other “because they all share the same message.”
“And that message is that the rule of law applies,” he said.
