Dem Rep: I Was Using ‘Subtle Humor’ When I Said I Feared Guam Would ‘Capsize’

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), who said last week that he feared the island of Guam would “capsize” if the U.S. sends more troops there, has released a statement explaining that his remark was an “obviously metaphorical reference.”

At a House Armed Services hearing last week, Johnson said that if the military goes through with a plan to send more troops to the island of Guam, his “fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize.”

Today he released the following statement in response to some media hubbub over his remark:

The subtle humor of this obviously metaphorical reference to a ship capsizing illustrated my concern about the impact of the planned military buildup on this small tropical island.
