DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley says his age won’t slow him down as he runs for a 7th term.

The 81-year-old said Friday that age “isn’t a factor or I wouldn’t be running.”

The six-term Republican held the first fundraiser for his 2016 campaign earlier this week and is nearly halfway through his annual tour of all 99 Iowa counties. Grassley enjoys solid approval ratings and has been in elected office since 1959.

So far he does not have a major Democratic challenger even though Iowa is a political swing state that twice supported Democratic President Barack Obama. Former state lawmaker Bob Krause is planning a bid and other Democrats are considering the race.

I imagine he’ll run on a platform opposing “career politicians.”

  2. Lending credence to the adage that only the good die young.
