The Government Accountability Office found Thursday that Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson broke the law when he bought a $31,561 dining set to furnish his office.
The dining set, plus an $8,000 dishwasher, violated the requirement that agencies must notify Congress when spending over $5,000 on office furnishings, the GAO found.
At the time, Carson shifted the blame for the dining set onto his wife, saying that he wasn’t aware of the purchase beforehand and that he cancelled the transaction when he learned of it.
