California fire officials say wildfires around the state have forced roughly 50,000 people from their homes.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman Lynne Tolmachoff said Sunday that 12,000 firefighters were battling 17 significant fires in California.

She said the state has experienced considerably more fire activity so far this year than it did over the same period of time last year, and the worst part of the fire season was still to come.

A fire in the Redding area about 230 miles (370 kilometers) north of San Francisco has claimed five lives and destroyed more than 500 buildings while charring 139 square miles (360 square kilometers).

No kidding. Waking up to smoke on the horizon and Nixle alerts throughout the day, are the new norm where I live.

  2. And Potus is tweeting about shutting down the government and the NYTimes. 5 people lost their lives and likely that toll will climb, Yosemite is closed, big fires in So.Cal as well but our hard working guy is busy tweeting nonsense and playing golf at tax payer expense. Laziest Potus ever and he cannot be gone soon enough for me.

I live north of Redding and I have to say I am deeply impressed with the response from the immigrant community. Plenty of restaurants and businesses are offering free meals, handling donations, etc, but either most are run by immigrants or else immigrants are doing a much better job of getting out the word than everybody else.

On a positive note I didn’t even know we had a Cuban restaurant and I’m stoked to go give them some of my business once this calms down
