Former mayor of New York MICHAEL BLOOMBERG is seen in a press conference in Jerusalem prior to a ceremony in which he will receive the Genesis Prize, and an award of one million dollars, which he will later donate. This is the first year the Genesis Prize is taking place, the project "seeks to recognize individuals who have attained excellence and international renown in their chosen professional fields, and whose actions, in addition to their achievements, embody the character of the Jewish people through commitment to Jewish values, the Jewish community and/or to the State of Israel." as it explained in the website. WASHINGTON (AP) — Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is officially a Democrat again.

The global media company founder on Wednesday said he has registered as a Democrat, which would be especially significant if he decides to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020. Bloomberg says on social media he did so “because we need Democrats to provide the checks and balance our nation so badly needs.”

Bloomberg did not say when he might make a decision on running for president. He served three terms as New York City mayor and has variously been a Democrat, a Republican and an independent. He twice flirted with running for president as an independent candidate.

Bloomberg has thrown money and support behind Democrats and is attacking Republicans on abortion and gun policies.

  1. Uh-Oh. 2020 Dem race is going to be like the 2016 GOP race with 11+ candidates. Which, is not necessarily a bad thing as long as the good candidates aren’t drowned out by the showy ones (Avenatti/Bloomberg). Although, Bloomberg was at least Mayor of NYC and was fairly popular

It almost always starts with a crowd of 9-10 + … Iowa and NH tended to wash out the lower tier… seems like big money and the fractionalization of media have enabled some marginal candidates to hang longer.
It can be a weird process - odd stuff can happen and surprises emerge.

  3. The worry is him running as an Independent, which could give Trump a second term. This indicates he won’t do that, so good news.

  4. There are many times that I’ve disagreed with Bloomberg, but then there are many times I’ve agreed with him, enough so that I could support him. He is not the ideal person to enact the policies that I personally want, but the country needs to be led to the left, not jerked to the left. Bloomberg may be able to do this.

  5. Hey if he wants to do it, why not? He doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning a nomination, but he’d be interesting to hear from during primary debates.
