A new six-figure ad buy — purchased in light of the Justice Department shake up that’s put a Trump loyalist in charge of the special counsel investigation — is set to run on cable news networks and urge Congress to protect Robert Mueller’s probe.
“Democracy can’t exist in the dark,” a narrator says, after a rendition of “This Little Light of Mine,” while D.C. landmarks like the White House and the Capitol shut off their lights. “But that’s where this President wants to leave us. Tell Congress to protect the Mueller investigation.”
The ad was purchased by Protect the Investigation, a partnership of several progressive organizations and nonpartisan watch dog groups. It comes after President Trump on Wednesday ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and replaced him with Matt Whitaker, who prior to joining the Justice Department last year made critical comments of Mueller.
Before Sessions’ departure, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was overseeing the investigation due to Sessions’ recusal. Whitaker’s ascent to acting attorney general means that he will be taking charge of the probe.
