Top Republican Senators are pressing the Justice Department to appoint an independent counsel to investigate the disclosure of classified national security information, saying the current probe lacks integrity.

“We need someone who the American people can trust, and we need to stop the leaks that are endangering the lives of those men and women who are serving our country with valor our courage. And they deserve a lot better,” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said.

Attorney General Eric Holder appointed two top federal prosecutors to investigate, but even whistleblowers who have been critical of the Obama administration’s pursuit of leak cases say they aren’t independent enough.

Currently, about 30 GOP senators have signed a letter to Holder saying that the “numerous national security leaks reportedly originating out of the executive branch in recent months have been stunning,” Fox News reports.

“If there were ever a case requiring an outside special counsel with bipartisan acceptance and widespread public trust, this is it,” the letter states.
