A third DHS employee now appears to have criminal sexual tendencies involving children.
For a Dateline NBC segment on sex predators, Southern California police set up a sting: A decoy pretended to be a 12- or 13-year old online at home, alone. Sex predators found the decoy on the Internet and arranged to meet. When they showed up, the police arrested them.
Caught in the net was Michael Burks, 30, a former La Verne, Calif. police officer who was a DHS “agent,” according to a Jan. 14 Los Angeles Times article (not online).
An online version of the NBC Dateline report from Feb. 3 includes the following exchange between Burks and a police officer:
Michael Burks: My father was a police officer. I was a police officer. I work for the Department of Homeland Security. I understand you guys have a job to do and Iâm not trying to tell anything else other than that. I swear to God, as God as my witness, Iâm wearing a St. Michaelâs medal right now, okay? I was not going to do anything with her.
But the detective doesnât seem to be buying his story.
Police officer: I am telling you I donât believe that you didnât intend to have sex at some point with the girl.
Burks: Sir, I swear to God.
Police officer: It would have happened, I guarantee you, it would have happened.
And he has one more thing to say to the disgraced federal agent.
Police officer: In your position, you should have known better. You know the law. Thatâs even worse. You know what, that puts a bad mark on my job, on everybody. Every cop in this country you put a bad mark on.
Burks: I know, sir.
