Two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents were shot in Mexico earlier today, the agency has announced. The agents were driving between Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico, and were attacked by “unknown assailants.”

“Earlier this afternoon, two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents assigned to the ICE Attaché office in Mexico City were shot in the line of duty while driving between Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico, by unknown assailants,” a ICE spokesperson told TPM in a statement. “ICE is working with the U.S. State Department, Mexican authorities and other U.S. law enforcement partners to investigate the shooting. Our thoughts and prayers are with our colleagues.”

The spokesperson said no further details were available.

Late Update: ICE Director John Morton has issued a statement in which he says one of the agents has died:

I am deeply saddened to report that two of our agents assigned to the ICE Attaché Office in Mexico City were shot today in the line of duty. One of those agents has succumbed to his injuries and the other remains hospitalized.

This is a difficult time for ICE and especially for the families and loved ones of our agents. Our hearts and prayers go out to them. This tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks confronted and the sacrifices made by our men and women every day.

We are working closely with our partners here in the United States and in Mexico to ensure those responsible for this senseless act are brought to justice.
