White House press secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday that failing to respond to a reported chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime in Syria would pose a “significant” threat to U.S. national security, making it clear the administration believes intervening in the state is in the national interest.
Carney stopped short of endorsing all-out regime change in the country, however.
Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday it was “undeniable” that chemical weapons were used in Syria, while condemning the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. President Barack Obama has reportedly not yet made a decision whether to employ military force in response to the attack.
Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), a member of the Armed Services Committee, released a statement Tuesday calling for American military intervention in Syria.
