The White House’s National Security Council confirmed Wednesday that an online video of U.S. journalist James Foley being executed by a member of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was authentic.

“The U.S. Intelligence Community has analyzed the recently released video showing U.S. citizens James Foley and Steven Sotloff,” NSC spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement. “We have reached the judgment that this video is authentic. We will continue to provide updates as they are available.”

At the end of the same video, ISIS showed missing U.S. journalist Steven Sotloff. One of the group’s members threatened in the video that Sotloff would be killed next unless the United States ended its airstrikes against ISIS.
