Votes Still Being Counted In Giffords Special, Paper Calls It For Democrat

The votes are still being counted in the Arizona special election that will determine who serves out the remainder of Rep. Gabby Giffords’ (D) term in office, but a couple hours after polls closed the Arizona Daily Star called the race for Democrat Ron Barber, who served as a Giffords aide before she resigned following the tragic shooting that gravely wounded her in January, 2011. The Associated Press has yet to call the race.

From the Star:

With all the votes in Cochise, Pinal and Santa Cruz counties counted and nearly all of the early ballots in Pima County plus 38 percent of its precincts from in-person voting tallied, Barber has a 7-point lead.

Barber has maintained 52 percent of the vote. [GOP nominee Jesse] Kelly is at 45 percent. Charlie Manolakis has two percent.
