San Francisco Police Fatally Shoot Man With Knife (Graphic Video)

San Francisco police said officers shot and killed a man suspected of stabbing another man in the shoulder on Wednesday afternoon.

Police found the man on Keith Street in the Bayview District with a “six- to eight-inch kitchen knife” after the stabbing victim reported his assailant was still in the area, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said that police initially fired lead-filled beanbags at the man, who fell and got back up. Five officers then opened fire after the man approached one of them with the knife, Suhr said.

Some of the final moments of the confrontation were captured on an Instagram video taken from a city bus. A woman on the street can be heard yelling, “Just drop it!” The camera then cuts away after the first shot is fired, but the thunder of more than a dozen shots still can be heard.

The man, who was not identified, died at the scene, Suhr said.

Suhr said the man had “already demonstrated, by committing a felony aggravated assault, that he was a danger to others, so he could not be allowed to move away from the scene,” according to the Chronicle.

Public Defender Jeff Adachi told the Chronicle the use of lethal force didn’t seem necessary.

“It does not look like the officer who fired the fatal shots was in immediate danger of being killed,” he said of the footage he saw.
