A Tennessee man who had allegedly sent a letter to the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCooper demanding $1 million worth of Bitcoins be deposited into an account or else he would release Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s purportedly stolen tax returns in 2012 has been indicted, according to a Wednesday press release from the Department of Justice.
Michael Mancil Brown, 34, faces charges of extortion and wire fraud.
“The indictment alleges that Brown devised a scheme to defraud Romney, the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and others by falsely claiming that he had gained access to the PricewaterhouseCoopers internal computer network and had stolen tax documents for Romney and his wife, Ann D. Romney, for tax years prior to 2010,” the statement reads.
