The sole survivor of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, Brendan McDonough, read the “Hotshot Prayer” at a memorial service Tuesday for his 19 fellow squad members who were killed June 30 while fighting the Yarnell Hill fire.
“I am called to duty Lord, to fight the roaring blaze. Please keep me safe and strong, I may be there for days,” the poem started.
The poem concluded with the line, “Lord bless my Hotshot crew, my family one and all.”
After reading the poem, McDonough said “I miss my brothers” and thanked everyone for supporting him.
Vice President Joe Biden and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer were in attendance.
