The Senate Conservatives Fund, one of the national groups backing Chris McDaniel’s effort to overturn his loss to Sen. Thad Cochran in the Mississippi GOP primary last month, sent out an email Saturday asking for donations to the “McDaniel Legal Fund.”

“We know that more Republicans voted for Chris McDaniel than Thad Cochran in the primary and the runoff,” the group’s email says, “and we can’t allow the GOP establishment to illegally use Democrats to steal the election.

SCF says that the funds will be used to “pay the expenses of the lawyers overseeing poll book inspections, the preparation of the evidence to ascertain if an appeal is warranted, and the legal expenses if a court challenge is made.”

It says that the legal fund is a separate account, so donors can give up to $2,600 even if they previously donated to McDaniel’s campaign.

As of late Saturday afternoon, a click-through to the SCF’s website showed that the group had raised $19,100 toward its $50,000 goal for the fund.
