San Diego Democratic Chair: ‘It’s Either Recall Or Resign’ For Filner

The chairwoman of the San Diego County Democratic Party renewed her call Friday for Mayor Bob Filner to step down, saying the embattled Democrat who’s facing charges of sexual harassment has a choice: resign or face a recall effort.

Following Filner’s announcement that he will be checking into rehab for two weeks while continuing to be briefed on city activities twice a day, Francine Busby told Fox News Channel’s Shep Smith that she doesn’t think San Diegans will support the decision.

“Well, you know, the ball’s in the mayor’s court because in San Diego it’s either recall or resign. I mean, there’s no other way for the mayor to step down,” Busby said. “It looks like he made the decision to try to rehabilitate himself. I don’t think the people in San Diego want a mayor who is in rehab while this story continues to unfold. Charges have been filed and I think they’d rather wipe the slate clean and get a fresh start.”

Busby said Thursday that local Democrats are urging Filner to resign and do what’s “in the best interest of the city.”
