Ron Paul countered Herman Cain, who had said that Alan Greenspan would be a model for the type of person he would appoint as Federal Reserve Chair.

“Alan Greenspan was a disaster!” Paul said.

Paul gave some credit to past Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker — who was originally appointed by Jimmy Carter, and was retained by Ronald Reagan up through 1987 — for curbing inflation. But he blasted Greenspan, and current Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, for loose-money policies.

Paul also pointedly criticized Greenspan for abandoning the Gold Standard, which he he had once supported, though he speculated that Greenspan might be coming back to the idea in his retirement.
