If he had it his way, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) would like to see the Department of Education abolished.

Johnson, up for re-election in 2016, made the comment to a small crowd in New London on Saturday.

“I would sure love to do it,” Johnson said in response to a question about the Department of Education. “One of the reasons I got involved and thought I could run for senate is I was involved heavily on a volunteer basis in our education system in Oshkosh.”

Johnson’s comments were flagged by a Democratic tracker following the Wisconsin Republican.

“I’m all for local control not only in the school system but in so many other areas,” Johnson added. Johnson graduated from the University of Minnesota, a public university, with a degree in business and accounting.

Like Johnson, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), has said he would like to abolish the Department of Education along with the Internal Revenue Service.
