During an interview on conservative comedian Dennis Miller’s radio program, former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Wednesday said he’s still trying to find a way “to keep America as strong and vibrant as possible.”
“I’m very concerned about the country. I have to be honest, Dennis. I wouldn’t have gotten into this if I thought things were going swimmingly,” Romney said. “I’m still concerned about the country and I keep looking for the most effective way for me to try and get the country on a course of remaining strong and powerful in terms of our values, our military, our soft power, our economy. The American people need a strong America. I’m going to keep finding ways to keep America as strong and vibrant as possible. That’s the frustration with losing, which is I don’t have the influence I obviously could have had I won that election.”
The interview, during which Miller referred to Romney as “the Mittster” and “guv,” was highly personal and largely avoided politics. Miller at one point congratulated Romney on his 44th wedding anniversary, which he’s celebrating Thursday with his wife Ann. The former Massachusetts governor admitted that his relationship, which began when he and his wife were both in high school, is “very unusual.”
“Forty-four great years. Amazingly, 21 grandchildren right now. I think it’s 21, it could be 22,” Romney joked. “But it’s been very unusual. I mean we met in high school. She was 15 when we started dating.”
