The Romney campaign raised $170 million in September, according to an email sent to top donors, the New York Times reports. That comes close to the record $181 million raised by President Obama and Democrats last month.

The announcement is part of a final fundraising push and coincides with the beginning of a  three-day retreat for top donors in New York.

From the Times:

In an e-mail message to top donors and fundraisers on Monday afternoon, Mr. Romney’s campaign said that it had raised $170 million in September, nearly as much as the near-record $181 million raised by Mr. Obama, but needed to bring in even more money in October to capitalize on Mr. Romney’s surge in swing states like Florida and Ohio.
