Congress is delaying a plan to send weapons to Syrian rebels out of concern that the arms may end up in the hands of Islamist militants, Reuters reported Monday, citing five anonymous national security sources.

The U.S. announced its plan to distribute military aid weeks ago, but none of the aid has arrived in Syria, Reuters reported. Committees in both the Senate and House reportedly expressed misgivings about the planned program.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced his opposition to the U.S. plan to arm Syrian rebels, and according to a Pew poll released last month, 70 percent of Americans opposed it as well.
