Retired Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey, to Lester Holt on “Nightly,” said that “we may be seeing a watershed event take place” in Afghanistan, following this week’s attacks on U.S. service members in Kabul.
“After a decade, and hundreds of billions of dollars and 16,000 U.S. casualties, we see how shallow the impact we have on this primitive society is,” he said.
“We need to reevaluate the notion of having thousands of Americans isolated all over Afghanistan,” he added. “It’s about time for us to step forward and take a new look at our security strategy.”
