Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Thursday that Democrat Hillary Clinton would abandon the United States’ allies if she were to occupy the White House.
The remark comes less than a day after Donald Trump startled the foreign policy community by telling The New York Times that he would consider helping the United States’ NATO allies if they “have fulfilled their obligations to us.”
“In foreign policy, a Clinton presidency means forgetting our friends and enabling our enemies,” Priebus said at the Republican National Convention.
He went on to criticize Clinton for “abandoning our greatest ally in the Middle East, the nation of Israel” and for allowing the Islamic State terror group to gain power.
Trump staffers also notably worked to soften passages in the 2016 Republican Party’s platform related to arming Ukraine to combat Russian forces.
