Rebekah Brooks, former News of the World editor and News International chief executive, is being charged with conspiracy to “pervert the course of justice” by attempting to hide evidence from police in Britain’s phone-hacking scandal.
Brooks’ husband, Charlie Brooks, will face similar charges, along with Brooks’ former assistant, chauffeur and two members of News International’s security staff.
These are the first charges made since police began their latest phone-hacking inquiry in Jan. 2011.
