A new snap poll from Rasmussen conducted on Wednesday shows former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum opening up a huge lead ahead of Ohio’s March 6th Republican primary, part of Super Tuesday. Santorum gets 42 percent of likely Ohio Republican primary voters, as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney sees 24 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gets 13 and Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) is at ten. From Rasmussen:
Santorum’s advantage in Ohio reflects national trends since his sweep last week of GOP caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota and a non-binding primary in Missouri as party conservatives seek an alternative to Romney. The former senator has bounced to a 12-point lead over Romney nationally and moved slightly ahead of the GOP pack in Romney’s native state of Michigan. He also runs slightly stronger now against President Obama than Romney does in Florida, New Mexico and Ohio.
In the Buckeye State, 35% of primary voters think Romney would be the strongest opponent to the president, but, for the first time in any Rasmussen Reports state or national surveying, just as many (34%) say the same of Santorum.
The current TPM Poll Average shows Santorum soaring in Ohio.
