During a House Ways and Means Committee hearing on Tuesday, in which members of Congress heard testimony from representatives of conservative groups who say they were treated unfairly by the IRS, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) offered up some sympathetic remarks.
“Now, with the IRS, most of us know that this is an experience — a telephone call from the IRS — somehow, historically, it’s a very, very uncomfortable feeling,” Rangel said.
Rangel may have been speaking from experience. The New York Democrat was censured by the House in 2010 for, among other things, failing to report taxable income on a rental villa in the Dominican Republic. Earlier this year, Rangel filed a lawsuit against six fellow lawmakers, arguing that evidence was withheld in the House ethics probe that ultimately led to the censure.
