Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) told National Review in an interview published Thursday that he’s “considering” providing support to Steve Lonegan, the Republican squaring off against Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker (D) in New Jersey’s special U.S. Senate election.
“In all likelihood, we’ll go in and either financially or try to help him through an endorsement or something,” Paul said. “He just won the endorsement recently and we’d like to try to help him.”
The move would give Paul a presence on the turf of his emerging GOP rival, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R). Christie endorsed Lonegan earlier this week, saying the Republican nominee will serve as a “clear and powerful voice for putting people back in charge of the government, not government in charge of the people.”
The clear favorite in the race, Booker also received a high-profile endorsement this week when President Barack Obama officially announced Wednesday that he’s supporting the high-profile mayor.
