North Carolina voters have a higher opinion of the Moral Monday protesters who have been swamping the capitol in recent months than they do of the legislature that occupies it, according to a PPP poll released Tuesday.
The Democratic leaning firm also found that North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) has found himself with a negative net approval rating. Forty percent of voters told PPP that they approve of the job McCrory has been doing while 49 percent said they disapprove. McCrory recently ridiculed the Moral Monday protesters, who he said do “not represent the majority of those who call themselves moral.”
Asked which they had a higher opinion of, 47 percent of voters chose the protestors while 41 percent chose the General Assembly, PPP reported. The protesters have been gathering, and often getting arrested, at the state capitol each week to oppose the state’s GOP policymaking.
In addition, only 34 percent of voters said they support the abortion-restriction bill the governor has promised to sign, while 48 percent want him to veto the bill, according to the poll.
PPP used automated phone interviews to survey 600 North Carolina voters between July 12-14. The margin of error was 4 percent.
