A large majority of the American public believes that Bashar al-Assad’s regime gassed its own people but skepticism toward U.S. military intervention in Syria remains high, according to new poll numbers released Monday.
The latest CNN/ORC International survey showed that while eight in 10 Americans believe that the Assad regime used chemical weapons — the central part of the Obama administration’s case for military action — almost seven in 10 believe that it is not in America’s national interests to get involved in the protracted civil war. More than seven in 10 said that a military strike in Syria would not achieve significant goals for the U.S.
The poll numbers provide more evidence that President Barack Obama is facing stiff public opposition to the resolution to authorize military action in Syria. A pair of polls last week — one from Pew Research Center and the other courtesy of ABC News and The Washington Post — painted similar portraits of a war-weary public.
Obama is scheduled to go on a media blitz Monday to continue to make his case for military action against Assad.
