A ballot inititive to legalize same-sex marriage in Maine is supported by a majority of likely voters, according to a poll released Wednesday commissioned by the Portland Press-Herald and conducted by in-state firm Pan Atlantic SMS Group. Fifty-five percent support the inititive, while 39 percent are opposed.
The survey comes one week after polls have showed a close race to ban gay marriage in Minnesota and solid support to legalize it in Washington state.
The PollTracker average sees support for legalizing gay marriage in Maine at 54 percent, with opposition standing at 44 percent.
