Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) cleanly defeated his tea party challenger in the Republican primary for his congressional seat on Tuesday night.

The Associated called the race for Sessions less than an hour after polls closed in the Texas primary. Sessions defeated Dallas Tea Party candidate Katrina Pierson with 69 percent of the vote to Pierson with 29 percent of the vote.

Sessions’s victory was one of the first races called on Tuesday.

In an interview with TPM before polls closed, Pierson signaled that she did not expect to win the nomination but said she expected to win more than 20 percent of the vote.

Pierson had been endorsed by FreedomWorks and Sarah Palin.
