House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) highlighted Wednesday that demand for health coverage through the federal marketplaces mandated by the Affordable Care Act has been high.

“In just the first month of enrollment, nearly a million Americans have completed the eligibility process for the quality, affordable coverage available on the health insurance marketplaces,” Pelosi said in a statement.

Even though enrollment in health insurance plans in the federal marketplace were low in the first month, Pelosi said that the number of people who have completed the eligibility process shows that Obamacare rollout is off to a good start.

“While these figures are lower than originally projected because of the website issues, Massachusetts’ implementation of health care reform shows that we can expect enrollment to grow through the next five months,” Pelosi said. “As access to the website improves, millions of Americans will see the quality, affordable coverage available to them on the marketplaces.”

Only 106,185 have selected a plan through the state-run and federal marketplaces, and 1,081,592 have completed the eligibility process, according to a HHS report released Wednesday.
