House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) issued a statement Tuesday condemning President Bashar al-Assad’s regime for a devastating chemical weapons attack that killed scores in Syria last week.
“The Syrian government’s horrific, wanton, and undeniable use of chemical weapons against its own people is a clear violation of any moral standard and places the Assad regime well outside the circle of respect for basic human rights,” Pelosi said. “President Assad’s partnership with Iran and designated terrorist organization Hezbollah to perpetrate such violence only further threatens the safety of the Syrian people and the stability of the region.”
Pelosi, who was a staunch opponent of the Iraq war during George W. Bush’s presidency, stopped short of endorsing a military response advocated by some on her aisle, however.
“Moving forward, Members of Congress stand ready to consult with President Obama to consider the appropriate course of action in response to these acts of brutality,” she said.
