Paul Ryan Backs Adoption By Same-Sex Couples

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) said Monday that he supports the right of gay couples to adopt children, reversing his former opposition to adoption by same-sex couples, ThinkProgress reported

Ryan said at a town hall meeting in Janesville, Wis., that he no longer opposes gay adoption, which he voted to prohibit in the District of Columbia in 1999.

“Adoption, I would vote differently these days,” Ryan said. “That was I think a vote I took in my first term, in 1999 or 2000. I do believe that if there are children who are orphans who do not have a loving person or couple, you know, I think if a person wants to love and raise a child they ought to be able to do that. Period. I would vote that way.”

Ryan also reaffirmed his belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.

In a separate report, Ryan told local ABC affiliate WKOW TV that he changed his mind on that issue years ago.
