President Obama on Monday congratulated the Iraqi Prime Minister-designate, Haider al-Ibadi.

Obama said that Iraqi Prime Minister Fouad Massoum’s decision to nominate al-Ibidi to form a new government was a “promising step forward.”

Obama said that while the U.S. has “stepped up military advice and assistance to Iraqi and Kurdish forces,” there isn’t a military solution to the situation in Iraq.

“The only lasting solution is for Iraqis to come together and form an inclusive government,” he said.
