South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) will be a “special guest” at a fundraiser Wednesday for embattled congressional candidate and former Gov. Mark Sanford (R), according to GOPwrite.com. Sanford is currently in a heated special election against Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District seat.
Though Sanford first encouraged Haley to run for governor, Haley has kept some distance from her former mentor during the special election. She endorsed Sanford through a spokesperson only after he won his party’s primary earlier this month, according to the Washington Post.
It was Haley’s decision to appoint then-congressman Tim Scott (R-SC) to replace retiring Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) that created the May 7 special election. After winning the Republican primary, Sanford’s campaign took a hit when his ex-wife Jenny Sanford accused him of violating their divorce agreement by entering her home without permission earlier this month.
