Newt Gingrich is poised to win the primary in his former home state of Georgia — but neither he nor his wife Callista are voting today, in his current home state of Virginia.
“Newt and Callista are not casting a ballot in Virginia and they did not request an absentee one,” Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond told NBC News late Monday.
Gingrich was knocked off the ballot back in December, when enough of the petition signatures that his campaign turned in — gathered in something of a last-minute rush before the deadline — ended up being disqualified due to a fraudulent employee. At the time, Gingrich was actually ahead in the polls for the state’s primary.
Only two candidates, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul, successfully qualified for the Republican primary ballot in Virginia, and there is no option for a write-in vote.
