Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) said Sunday that he thought House Speaker John Boehner’s decision to resign came at the “perfect moment.”

Boehner announced Friday that he was stepping down from his position at the end of October.

“It was my plan to only serve as Speaker until the end of last year, but I stayed on to provide continuity to the Republican Conference and the House,” Boehner said in a statement. “It is my view, however, that prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable damage to the institution.”

Gingrich, who appeared on CBS’ “This Week” Sunday also resigned from the post.

“I had no idea he was going to announce the next day, but in retrospect it was the perfect moment, because it was never going to get better,” Gingrich said.

The pope had given a speech to Congress the day before Boehner announced his resignation.

“Boehner is a very devout Catholic. This was the high point of his speakership,” Gingrich said. “I think he was very emotional about the pope, having both blessed his grandchild and talked to him privately for a few minutes. And I think he figured, you know, it’s not going to get any better.”

Just when the two jackasses (Kanye West and Ben Carson) are touting a mutual admiration society, we have Newt and Boehner starting a club for resigned, disgraced Speakers.

  2. So says The Man Who Broke America. The Beltway MSM may still worship at his icon in the Temple of Savvy, but history will judge him, and them, harshly.

  3. At least for once, this was a topic Gingrich had some expertise in. The CBS chyron could have said:

Senior Speaker of the House Resignation Correspondent
