Melania Trump, Donald Trump’s wife, gave her longest campaign address to date on Monday when she told the crowd at the Republican National Convention that the real estate mogul would bring the drama in his race against Hillary Clinton for the White House.
But she also seemed to attempt to broaden her husband’s appeal to voters after scores of speakers took the stage and spoke on Clinton, the Benghazi attacks, illegal immigration, and police shootings.
“The race will be hard-fought all the way to November. There will be good times and hard times. And unexpected turns,” Melania Trump said. “It would not be a Trump contest without excitement and drama.”
Compared to some of those who took the stage before her, Trump was even-keeled throughout her speech, in which she described how Trump’s hard-working attitude would benefit him in the White House.
While she didn’t name specific policies that he would put in place, she said her husband wants “prosperity” for all Americans.
“Donald intends to represent all the people, not just some of the people,” she said. “That includes Christians, Jews and Muslims. It includes Hispanics and African-Americans and Asians and the poor and middle class.”
She reminded the audience that she wasn’t a natural-born citizen herself and that she had worked her way up as a model.
“On July 28, 2006, I was very proud to become citizens of the United States, the greatest privilege on planet Earth,” she declared.
Could that have been any more impersonal? She didn’t even kiss him at the end.
Maybe he’s going to drop out and reveal this all as a big con. That would be some drama.
Pausing only once to interject, “Dahnald! Iz Mooze und Sqvirrel!”
She’s far more articulate than her husband, at least.
It’s true that Melania didn’t personalize the Donald, but her delivery was better than I expected. Compared to Joni Ernst, she deserves an award for elocution. Joni is really a stilted speaker - pausing in the wrong places, misplacing accents in words, etc - it sounds like she doesn’t quite understand what she is saying. I thought she was supposed to be the model for Republican women politicians.
