Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Friday suggested retiring Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) as a replacement for former Veterans Affairs Sec. Eric Shinseki, who resigned last week.

McCain elaborated on why he felt Cobun should lead the VA during a town hall in Mesa, Ariz. on Friday.

“He (Coburn) is very familiar with the Veteran Affairs issue (and) he is the greatest reformer in the United States Senate,” McCain said, according to KTAR News. “I believe that Dr. Tom Coburn would be the best possible replacement.”

Coburn, who is retiring at the end of 2014 before his term is up, is a close friend of President Obama, as they began their Senate careers in the same freshman class.
