Newark Mayor Cory Booker argued that President Obama faced a tough situation in his first debate with Mitt Romney because he had to come across as presidential, which he said is not necessarily consistent with taking shots at your opponent, during an interview on CNN’s “Starting Point” Thursday. As an example, Booker pointed to Obama’s missed opportunity to jump on Romney’s mention of his accountant.
I remember when Romney said, “I should — if that’s right, president, I’ll hire a new accountant.” I wanted to scream out, Obama, say, “keep your accountant. They’re allowing you to pay only 13 percent in taxes. The rest of us should have accountants like that.”
Booker added, “But that’s like a shot I don’t want to hear from my president.”
Nevertheless, Booker predicted that the president will “come out strong” in the second debate next week.
